Contemporary challenges in teaching: What is the situation like in Latin America?
The situation experienced by education systems in Latin America and the entire world is the product of the results obtained from the management of educational policies and the contextualization of education for the development of the regions. For this reason, we describe below some aspects intended to identify the work of teachers in this set of changes that make education a fundamental pillar of contemporary society. To understand the current dynamics the work of teachers is going through, this document presents three important challenges for teachers: a) Teacher participation in educational policies, analyzing the situation of some Latin American countries and their progress in terms of teacher ties in the public educational agenda, b) Academic training in teaching work: this challenge is consolidated as a key point in teacher qualification and we examine the objectivity of this training in the transforming function of education, and c) New competences in the teaching task, perhaps this situation is a common denominator that, with the passing of the 21st century, has been established as an answer to transform education from the classroom, taking into account the contexts in which the globalized world is moving forward. Ultimately, the conclusions reached after these analyses are included, together with the bibliographical references that make this writing

Synopsis of the genus Spigelia (Loganiaceae) in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean
Background and Aims: Spigelia is a Neotropical genus with about 90 species distributed from the United States of America to Argentina. The diversity of the genus presents a spatial separation with a group in North-Central America/ the Caribbean (NA) and another in South America (SA), each with an important center of diversification. However, the systematic knowledge of the group has not been updated in the last 10 years, so the objective of this work is to generate a systematic synopsis for the genus distributed in the NA region.
Methods: The work was carried out through the search for bibliographic information to obtain the taxonomic history, field work and review of herbarium material, based on which diagnostic descriptions and distribution maps were made.
Key results: Twenty-nine species distributed in the NA region were found, which represents about 30% of the diversity of the genus, distributed in the tropical and subtropical zones. In the NA region, Mesoamerica is one of the regions in which plant diversity is concentrated, which classifies it as a hotspot. This work includes novel information on the morphology of the group, such as descriptions of the pollen and carpological characters, identification keys for regions in NA and distribution maps in the study area.
Conclusions: This study represents the first taxonomic treatment for the genus Spigelia that includes all the species of the central and northern regions of the Americas. The information collected in this work may be useful to be integrated into phylogenetic analyzes that help resolve the infrageneric relationships of the group. Likewise, the application of potential distribution modeling tools that would allow locating areas for future collection, as well as the development of biogeographic analyzes that help us understand the distribution patterns of Spigelia diversity along the continent
Investigating the role of glyoxal using satellite and MAX-DOAS measurements
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are key species in tropospheric chemistry, air pollution and climate. The largest fraction of VOC is emitted from natural sources, but significant contributions are also attributed to anthropogenic emissions and vegetation fires. Despite many studies estimating VOC amounts in the atmosphere and identifying their sources, the uncertainties in estimation are large. Glyoxal (CHOCHO), the smallest and most abundant of the alpha-dicarbonyls in the atmosphere, is an intermediate product in the oxidation of most VOC and an indicator of secondary aerosol formation in the atmosphere. Glyoxal in combination with other VOC (e.g. formaldehyde: HCHO) can be used for source identification of VOC. Glyoxal has been measured from space since 2003 by the SCIAMACHY and GOME-2 (MetOp-A) instruments and provides a unique global long-term dataset. The focus of this thesis is to retrieve glyoxal from measurements by the OMI instrument, to improve the SCIAMACHY and GOME-2 (MetOp-A and-B) analysis, and to investigate the resulting long-term datasets. The first part of this thesis focuses on the development of an improved retrieval for glyoxal from OMI measurements. From sensitivity tests, optimized fit parameters are determined. Two different approaches to reduce the interference of liquid water absorption over oceanic regions are evaluated, achieving a significant reduction of the number of negative columns over clear water regions. The impact of using different absorption cross-sections for water vapour is evaluated and only small differences are found. Finally, a high temperature (boundary layer ambient 294 K) absorption cross-section of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is introduced in the DOAS retrieval to account for potential interferences with NO2 over regions with large anthropogenic emissions, leading to improved fit quality over these areas. In a sensitivity test, a spectrum of backscattered solar radiation over the Pacific Ocean is used as a reference spectrum, in order to reduce the offsets ( stripes ) that sometimes are observed between viewing directions in the OMI instrument. The new retrieval has also been applied to measurements from SCIAMACHY and GOME-2 (MetOp-A and-B) instruments. Using the new CHOCHO dataset, the combination of four instruments provides more than 12 years of glyoxal measurements, which are used for the investigation of the temporal variability of VOC on a global scale. The link between vegetation, fires, anthropogenic activity, and glyoxal columns is investigated both globally and locally. This provides a general picture of where glyoxal comes from and what its temporal behaviour is depending on the region. CHOCHO and HCHO are used synergistically for the identification of VOC emission sources by computing their ratio and correlating it with indicators of biogenic emissions, fires, and anthropogenic activities, giving important information for assigning the ratios of glyoxal to formaldehyde to emission sources of VOC. In a case study, mapped averages are computed for a fire event in Russia between mid-July and mid-August 2010. Enhanced CHOCHO levels are found in close spatial and temporal proximity to elevated levels of fire radiate power, demonstrating that pyrogenic emissions can be clearly identified in the new CHOCHO data product. Also, for the first time long-range transport of glyoxal in the atmosphere has been clearly identified, where elevated levels of glyoxal follow the trajectories of simulated air masses. Finally, CHOCHO, HCHO, and NO2 columns have been retrieved from ground based measurements for two MAX-DOAS stations, which are part of the BREDOM network. Diurnal and seasonal variations have been computed for the three species and also the glyoxal to formaldehyde and formaldehyde to nitrogen dioxide ratios. The results have been compared to results from the satellite observations and with other studies
Capital-Intensive companies seek to guarantee the availability of their equipment and avoid an operational
stoppage to comply with their production commitments. For the fulfillment of this objective, these companies
foresee either redundancy of equipment or maintain considerable quantities of spare parts in their warehouses for
the attention of maintenance. However, as a consequence it has considerable costs for immobilized capital in the
case of redundancy, and costs of supply, storage and obsolescence in the case of spare parts. This paper proposes
a spare parts and segmentation management model, aligned to maintenance and sourcing strategies, which seeks
to minimize spare parts costs, and guarantee their availability for servicing maintenance, including inventory policy
criteria and the level of service required for maintenance. The study carries out an analysis of the processes and
with the opinion of experts of a capital-intensive company, contrasts business practice with the available literature,
to develop a maintenance spare parts management model. In business practice, there is a break between
maintenance processes and inventory management for their opposite objectives; and in the same way in the
available literature, the problem has been studied either from the standpoint of maintenance or inventory
management. For the validation of the management model, it was applied to business cases of spare parts segments,
verifying its validity, applicability and economic benefits in an oil pipeline company.
Academic plagiarism is a common and widespread practice among university students. Traditionally, this topic has been approached through studies that determine the factors that cause such practice, without delving into effective strategies to prevent it. Therefore, for this study we used a novel strategy called i_map, that reduces academic plagiarism through the strengthening of the search and information management skills, documentation of the research process and generation of own ideas by the student. The objective of this study was to determine and compare the effectiveness of i_map in the prevention of academic plagiarism with traditional strategies such as the reinforcement in paraphrasing and quoted text. The research was developed in three pedagogical spaces of the natural sciences career of CUED-UPNFM, each space was differentiated according to the type of strategy used (i_map, workshops of paraphrasing and textual citations, control team) for the development of academic essays. A total of 74 essays were analyzed. Data analysis was performed using a single-factor ANOVA and Welch test. The lowest levels of plagiarism (p = 0.0003246) and the highest mean values of cited academic sources (p = 0.0100) were recorded in the works of students who used i_map. This study concludes the effectiveness, statistically significant, of the use of i_map in the prevention of academic plagiarism; thus, we suggest the inclusion of this strategy as a tool to prevent such practice and at the same time to improve written assignments.
This is a feasibility study for organic production and marketing of quinine (Cinchona officinalis) in Loja. The study considers the cinchona tree production in 35 hectares over 10 years, with a density of 8.000 plants per hectare, where 4.000 are cinchona trees and other 4.000 are alders shade providers. This project will present an alternative against the traditional crops of Ecuador cloud forests. Despite the historical and economic importance of the cinchona tree, is currently nationally ranked as an species potentially threatened because over-exploitation for trade of its trees bark, mainly to extract the alkaloid quinine, the malaria cure during the seventeenth , eighteenth, nineteenth and mid-twentieth century. Data from market study are very old. In the offer study, the last major production of cinchona bark which corresponds to 1938, where Ecuador exported 73,481.9 bark kilograms, then in 1998 was the most recently exportation of 42,780 kilograms of cinchona bark with an FOB value of 1.759.928,30 and a benefit-cost of 16.555.
Background and Objectives: Apocynaceae are one of the most species diverse groups of Mexico with numerous contributions to understand its systematics and distribution. However, some taxa are little known, as in the case of Odontadenia macrantha. A description, new distribution records, and conservation status of O. macrantha in Mexico are presented. Methods: Based on detailed observation of specimens from different herbaria and taxonomic literature, a description of the taxon and a key to morphologically and geographically close species is presented. In addition, an assessment of the conservation status of the species in Mexico, based on the IUCN criteria, and a distribution map are provided.Key results: The presence of this species in Tabasco and Veracruz extends its distribution further northwards. Additionally, these records provided new types of vegetation in which the species grows, such as tropical rain forest, tropical forest with Curatella, tropical deciduous forest and Quercus forest. Odontadenia macrantha is a taxon of variable morphology, which is corroborated here, because it has smaller corollas than the individuals of southern populations. Here is suggested to place this species in the category of Endangered (EN C2ai) for being restricted to a small tropical area with a high anthropogenic activity and few individuals in the observed populations. Conclusions: These new records suggest that the constant review of biological collections to maintain knowledge on taxa updated is needed. In addition, collection activities should be continued in the vegetation remnants of Tabasco and Veracruz.
